BAC 6 – Winscombe 3 (F) (21/02/15)

Written By: Sally ‘I scored this week’ Curnow

Is it birds or is it planes? No…..it’s BAC Ladies in their shiny new waterproof jackets!!! *wolf whistles* We were looking sharp, but smelt like Carp!!! Today was the day we hosted Winscombe Ladies in a ‘friendly’ fixture and after a chin wag, some fence clambering, a rousing talk from our captain, the realisation our coach was umpiring for them, a look at Tinny’s new stick and a warm up, BAC were off….. We attacked from the whistle with Sledger and Bish working their magic in midfield which led to Kingers and Tinny up front giving the Winscombe keeper some work to do! (Whilst this was happening over on the left I could be seen trying to work out how to use a hockey stick!!) BAC kept up the pressure but somehow Winscombe had a break and managed to get into our D, after a scuffle or three they managed to sneak in a goal. 0 – 1 BAC were not going to let this stop them and continued to attack, right from the defence with some aMAZing skills from Maz who smashed the ball through to Bish who pushed up with our very own gazelle Sledger who passed it right to Liz, who then crossed it in to Tinny in the D who used some nifty skills and her new stick to get us a short corner. We remained calm picked a magic number and went for it, sadly for Winscombe and for Bish, one of the Winscombe defenders forgot she wasn’t the keeper and BAC were awarded a penalty. After a long discussion we all came to the decision that Tinny should take the penalty. Which she did and it went in, I’m told only just, but none the less it went in! 1 – 1 We continued to attack with some beautiful play down the right seeing Bish, Liz and Kingers working well in unison. A cross from Kingers to Tinny to take the shot, saw another short corner awarded. Tinny took a big strike on the ball, the keeper saved but stumbled, in came me (Sally) now able to use my stick and swept the ball into the goal! 2 – 1 Winscombe did manage to break again, but with Cheryl, WP, Maz and Becky the Bullet in goal, nothing was going to get through. Some great defence work and super clearance’s from the Becky the Bullet saw BAC attacking again, with a ball out from Maz to Dave to Sledger who then sprinted up the pitch and passed into Tinny. Who again was awarded with a short corner. Another number chosen, deployed and ending with Tinny striking it home! 3 – 1 Winscombe were clearly riled with this and attacked us, although our midfield and defence battled hard to keep them out with WP throwing herself to the floor to stop the attack and Maz taking no prisoner’s. They managed to sneak a goal past Becky the Bullet. 3 – 2 As you can imagine, BAC decided, 3 wasn’t the magic number and wanted more, so many more. So we pushed up and battled our way into the D, with Liz and Kingers doing some great line work on the right, ending with Lisa in the D and striking at the Goal, missing by only a hairs breadth. We kept the pressure up, there was a bit of a bundle on the 23, which saw me stumble and fall, but still manage to make the pass whilst on the floor to Tinny who reverse flicked it past the keeper!! 4 – 2 Some other stuff happened but I am writing this on Wednesday morning and I can’t remember much. The things I do remember are, Doug rolling his eyes at my positioning. Winscombe appealing for anything and everything. Oh and I remember the funniest moment of the game, which was when the very tall Winscombe player walked into and quite literally over an unsuspecting Bish!!! It turns out, the height difference meant the tall Winscombe player couldn’t see little Bish in her peripheral vision!!! There was also a moment when Chez leap frogged over a Winscombe player. Anyways, during this hilarity BAC attacked again and after a cracking pass from a high up the pitch Maz, Tinny had a one on one with the keeper and neatly slipped it in past said keepers foot. 5 – 2 With a quality 16 hit out from WP to Liz out on the right, the ball was passed up to Kingers on the line, who drove up and in and passed it a beauty into Tinny, who was waiting patiently on the spot and swept it home! 6 – 2 HALF TIME We learnt a lesson and have a new rule, if Dave makes a suggestion at half time, you strongly consider whether to listen or not. Basically the suggestion was we were going to try some ‘new stuff’. Off we went, being all new and different. Which saw Winscombe run all the way into our D with the ball to take a strike, which was fine as the Becky the Bullet was there, she scooped it up and chucked it out. Very impressive I must say!! They continued to attack and eventually after Becky stubbed her toe on the ball, it went in. 6 – 3 After a lot of toing and froing between D’s, with some impressive defensive skills from our midfield and defence, things started to go a bit wrong. With some miscommunication between our Chez and the umpire saw Chez taking some time out on the side line. Down to 10 men we saw off Winscombes attempts at getting another goal. With some more fantastic saves from Becky the Bullet and more pressure up front from Tinny and Kingers, who kept battling up the right despite her bruising, and had several attempts on goal. Welcome back to the pitch Kingers!! Finally the whistle blew!! We totally spanked them (That’s for you Chez). We continued the battle in the changing rooms with Winscombe wanting all the space, and being a touch disrespectful about their hosts, not realising Sledger was there, they soon did as she politely reminded them to be mindful of their surroundings. A carb loaded tea ensued and a bit of a joy ride in the car park. See WP for details and ask Coxy how spacious a Ford Focus boot really is.
